MainWelcoming Our New Friends into the Artisans Group Family

A customer is not just the person who hires us for their project.  Instead, a "customer" is everyone who is involved in the project: our client, each of our building partners, suppliers craftspeople, and even, the building inspector.  This philosophy allows all stakeholders to support each other optimally, which makes for successful projects.

Thanks to each of you and welcome to everyone who recently joined our Artisans Group network…we couldn't do it without YOU!  We appreciate the opportunity to work with you.

E-mail The Wright

Q: Hello, I was wondering if there is anything I can do to shorten the time it takes for hot water to come out of my sink. When I am working in the kitchen, I find that I am spending too much time waiting for the water to heat up. Is there a solution for this problem?

Thanks, Debbie Q.

A: Debbie, There certainly is a solution. You can have a recirculating pump installed.  Basically, this is a device that sits between your hot water heater and your sink that keeps warm water close to the tap and sends cold water back to be re-heated. This nifty device also saves fresh water, since it keeps you from having to run the faucet needlessly, so owning one can give you Federal tax credit for being environmentally savvy.

Give Yourself a Lasting Holiday Present: Get that Kitchen Organized

A kitchen can be a wonderful place to work but, at times, it can also be a bit of a nightmare. Trying to juggle stacks of skillets or dig around for potholders when something is already burning is no fun, but happens, at least occasionally. Fortunately, there is hope for lasting and substantial organization with kitchen cabinet organizers.

Kitchen cabinet organizers are pieces of hardware that can be installed in a cabinet 2 or cupboard to make it easier to get things when needed. An organizer often takes the form of a pull-out shelf or rack, which is mounted to a rail in the bottom or sides of the cabinet.  They allow us to set or hang items in the cabinet side by side, rather than stack them. In this way, it becomes possible to pull out a rarely used pan that's all the way in the back of the cabinet without having to move everything else.  The installation can be completed quickly and easily, and your kitchen cabinets can go from a frustrating mess to an easy to use, well-organized storage system at surprisingly little cost.

Insulate Your Attic to Save on Heat this Year

2Winter's here, and there's one part of the house that's often overlooked when people are getting their homes ready for winter: the attic. Heat rises, of course, and for this reason having a good bit of insulation installed properly in the attic can save your furnace a lot of work, and you a lot of money during the winter months. Also, particularly in older buildings, this measure will help keep upstairs bedrooms warm at night.

It's true that a lot of recently built or remodeled houses already have insulated attics, but living in one of these homes doesn't mean you're off the hook. The insulation that was sprayed into your attic could be a variety of different materials, some of which work better than others, and over time, insulation can settle and begin to lose its insulating effectiveness. Also, many of the older insulating materials did not provide any flame resistance, as opposed to newer materials.  This all means that even if your attic is insulated,

  1. it might be time for an upgrade,

  2. doing this could save you a lot of money on your energy bill, and

  3. new insulated can make your house more resistant to house fires.

In the long run, it's greener, cheaper, and safer to have the insulation in your attic done or redone sooner rather than later.  Although fuel and energy prices are relatively low, compared to the huge spike we saw in recent years, the prices won't always be this low, and you can bet that as the cost of heating a home goes up, the cost of upgrading a home's insulation will also go up. The smart thing would be to insulate your attic now, while it's cheap, and in time to start saving money on your heating bill this winter.  Remember to talk with your tax professional about any tax advantages!

Thank You for Your Kind Words

Myrna L. recently offered a gracious compliment about our extra effort to achieve the "right" finish as we created a section of "bent wood" trim in her newly remodeled kitchen.  This is an old-craftsman's technique to wrap solid wood around a curved surface.
